The Floods and Some Bright News 10.13.15

IMG_8835

It’s been a rough week for South Carolina agriculture. No real way to sugar-coat the reality that our state will miss out on millions of dollars in farming revenue as a result of the record rainfall last weekend. But if there is a bright side, it’s that many of our farmers and suppliers are still able to provide us with some of their products despite the hardship. It makes us all the more appreciative of every bit of local produce that comes in the door.

Among the highlights… Jim and Frederick Schaffer have been able to continue picking tomatoes, eggplant and jalapenos on Wadmalaw. Greg Johnsman brought in all the heirloom cherry tomatoes he could harvest on Edisto. We have sweet white corn and cream peas from Kemp McLeod in McBee. Mepkin Abbey hasn’t missed a beat delivering our mushrooms despite road and bridge problems in Monks Corner. And Mike Milligan came with pastured eggs even when Jamestown was calling for evacuation. We owe them all a big ‘thanks’ and Limehouse is proud to support them.

We’re fully stocked for fall with heirloom pumpkins of all kinds. They are 50 cents per lb. and we have a bunch of Long Island Cheese, Cinderella, and Fairytales that are good for cooking. North Carolina apples are available as well (Honeycrisp, Gala, Rome, Jonagold, Cortland and Jonathan varieties.)
